Financial Supports
SMS has a comprehensive system of financial support for graduate students. Almost every graduate is supported by a fellowship or an assistantship, in addition to on-campus accommodation (almost free of charge).
Currently there are National Fellowships, President’s Fellowships of Peking University, and the Dean’s Fellowship of SMS. The National Fellowship and President’s Fellowship of Peking University are highest honors for excellent graduate students. The recipients of these fellowships are expected to devote themselves to research and are encouraged to strive for greater progress. From 2012 to 2017,198 graduate students received President’s Fellowship of Peking University(totally 46,000yuan per year)and 86 of graduate students received National Scholarship(totally 30,000yuan per year). This is critically important in recruiting excellent applicants for the graduate program.
Most graduate students are supported via “Three-Assistantships” as Teaching Assistants (TA), Research Assistants (RA) or Administrative Assistants (AA). Students who receive assistantship are required to fulfill some designated duties. Grading homework is a typical task of teaching assistant. Any graduate student making a normal progress is eligible to apply for assistantship. The stipend is enough to cover the living cost of graduate student in light of the almost free dormitory.
With donations from various sources, SMS also provides students with scholarships on top of the financial support mentioned before. Graduate students may get extra money from his/her advisor’s research grant. The average of the total amount of our graduate students is amongst the highest in the universities and research institutes in China. However, some problems have emerged, such as lack of funds and unreasonable distribution of workload. Therefore SMS launched in 2015 a reform of financial support scheme of graduate students to make it simpler and more efficient. This reform has been carried out for two years and moved forwards smoothly.
Honors
Excellent Dissertations are recognized by the University, and a few of them go further to win municipal recognitions of Beijing. Not long ago there were even national recognitions, a great honor for doctoral students and their research advisor. In 2011-2016, 28 dissertations authored by Ph.D. students from SMS have won the best dissertations of Peking University, while the first two won the municipal extinction of Beijing. The list of best dissertations is as follows:
