The next International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM2018) will be held in Rio de Janeiro from August 1st to 9th, 2018. The website of ICM2018 has published the full list of invited speakers in June 15, 2017. There are 180+ outstanding mathematicians across 19 disciplines named on this impressive list, among them there are 12 Chinese mathematicians. Eight of these 12 distinguished mathematicians are alumni of Peking University, namely, Zhang Wei in number theory, Chenyang Xu and Zhiwei Yun in algebraic geometry and complex geometry, Xuhua He in Lie group and related, Jiangong You in dynamical systems and ordinary differential equations, and Pingwen Zhang, Tao Tang, Shi Jin in numerical analysis and scientific computing. Pingwen Zhang and Chenyang Xu are professors of the School of Mathematical Sciences and the Beijing International Center for Mathematical Research at Peking Univerdity, respectively.
The ICM is the academic conference in mathematics of the largest scale and highest level. It is a major honor to be an invited speaker at the ICM. Having 8 PKU allumni as ICM invited speakers demonstrates the strength and international reputation of PKU math. Peking Mathematics will continue to work hard contributing to new heights in the goals of building top discipline and creating world-class university at Peking.
