PKU Mathematics Delegation Visited Russia

From September 30 to October 3, a delegation of 10 mathematicians from Peking University visited Russia. The School of Mathematical Sciences of Peking University has maintained close cooperation with universities and research institutes in Russia such as Moscow State University. On April 15, a delegation from the Department of Mathematical Mechanics of Moscow University visited Peking University, and the two sides held a forum. This visit to Russia will further promote in-depth cooperation between Peking University and Russian universities and research institutes in the field of mathematics.

Headed by Professor Shi Yuguang, Deputy Dean of the School of Mathematical Sciences, and Professor Fan Huijun, Dean of the Department of Mathematics, the delegation consisted of teachers from the School of Mathematical Sciences and Beijing International Center for Mathematical Research.

From September 30 to October 1, the delegation visited the Department of Mathematical Dynamics of Moscow State University, in return of the university’s visit in April. The delegation visited the Auditorium of Moscow State University where Chairman Mao once delivered a speech entitled “the World is Yours” to Chinese students studying in Soviet Union in 1957.

On October 2, Cao Shihai, Minister and Education Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in the Russian Federation, received the delegation. Subsequently, the delegation visited the Steklov Mathematical Institute. Academician Dmitry V. Treschev, Director of the the Steklov Mathematical Institute, and Professor Sergeev Armen Glebovich welcomed the delegation. Professor Shi Yuguang introduced the development, organizations, scientific research and teaching of mathematics discipline at Peking University. The two sides expressed their hope to strengthen cooperation and exchanges, and explore more cooperative approaches such as jointly hosting academic conferences.

In addition to discussing cooperation and development, the two sides also hosted rich academic activities to exchange views. During the visit, the second Sino-Russia Joint Conference on Mathematics was held at Moscow State University. Professor Fan Huijun and Professor Zhang Zhifei respectively presided over a half-day conference. Ge Jian, Liu Yi, Ren Yanxia, Sun Wenxiang and Wang Jiajun attended the conference and gave reports. Professor Liu Yi introduced the research team and their research to those professors at St. Petersburg University.

Through the visit, Peking University has conducted in-depth exchanges on mathematics with Russian universities and research institutes, laying a solid foundation for further cooperation in the future.
