Abstract: We introduce a variational characterization of multisoliton solutions to the Korteweg-de Vries equation that is meaningful in $H^{-1}$, which is the space of optimal well-posedness for this equation.  As a consequence, we obtain orbital stability of multisoliton solutions in $H^{-1}$.  This is based on joint work with Rowan Killip.
